Whole Wheat for Your Health
There seems to be a big fuss now days about eating whole grains, but do you know why it’s important?
Many people don’t realize how nutritious whole wheat products can be for their body. Whole wheat is an amazing source of vitamins as well as magnesium, fiber, iron and antioxidants.
Eating whole grains helps to maintain a stable blood sugar level. Which makes whole wheat very important to diabetics. Whole grains have also been found to reduce the risks of cancer. To be considered a whole grain, it must have three key parts, the germ, the bran and the endosperm. Each of these parts of the wheat kernel contains different vitamins and must all be kept together to get the full benefit of the whole wheat.
Historians believe that man has been eating wheat for the last 12,000 years; it probably started in southwestern Asia in one of the so-called river civilizations. This incredibly nutritious plant was revered in parts of China as sacred food. In the U.S., wheat only started to be grown extensively in the 19th century after being introduced by Christopher Columbus in 1492.
Bulgur wheat is a type of cereal made from several wheat plants that can be found in natural food stores. It is a common ingredient found in Turkey, the Middle East, and around the Mediterranean. It is used in bakery, pilaf, soups, or even in salads. Bulgur has a low glycemic index of 46, which means that people suffering from diabetes can use it in moderation. The glycemic index or GI is a measure of the effect of carbohydrates on sugar levels in the blood. White bread for example has a GI of 100 which would produce a glucose level of 140, way above the recommended limit (95).
Since people are much more aware of the importance of whole grains now days it has become a lot easier to find whole grain versions of your favorite foods. You can now get whole grain pastas and whole grain baking mixes at the local supermarket. It is also a lot more convenient to make whole wheat food. You can buy whole grain cooking mixes for things like whole wheat pancakes and whole wheat muffins so you can whip up a healthy meal quickly and easily.
As you practice good nutrition, your child rend will learn it too. Children as will learn healthy habits that they will carry with them into adulthood. Keeping them healthy and fit.
There is absolutely no doubt that a diet high in whole wheat grains will benefit the whole family which is why I urge you not to wait for a doctors bad news to change your habits as I did.
